FEST is a charity which provides grants to support the education and training of young people (< 25 years) living in the Parish of Fairfield. The foundations of the Charity were laid by Anthony Swann in his will of 1662 when he left an annual sum of £4 per annum for the education of poor children in the Chapelry of Fairfield. This endowment was later added to as a result of the 1771 Enclosure Act by the additional of land known as Greenmoor. This land was later exchanged for land in the centre of the village. The Fairfield School Charity was eventually established in 1862 when the scheme for regulation and management of the charity was agreed.
In 1902 a new scheme allowed the Trustees to provide assistance for Fairfield pupils to move on to secondary schools and colleges and in 1982 further amendments to the scheme allowed the funding of special grants for education/training beyond the normal scope of the Local Education Authority as well as grants to the Fairfield Endowed Schools.
The Charity is administered by 11 trustees who include the Vicar, church wardens, and representatives of High Peak, Green Fairfield and Derbyshire councils as well as four members of St Peter’s Church. Grants are allocated on an annual basis with application forms being distributed in May and offers being made in August. There is also a Service of Thanksgiving held every year at St Peter’s Church in September.
Grants awarded each year total circa £20,000 comprising personal grants and grants to Fairfield Endowed Junior School.
